Some runners win races. Fewer win championships. Kieran Fitzgerald did both on the same afternoon — and that is why the Kinnelon standout is the very first Player of the Week in Hometown Hero News history.
At the NJAC cross country championships at Greystone on Tuesday, Fitzgerald won the boys Small School individual race in 16 minutes, 36.34 seconds, crossing the line as the fastest small-school runner in the entire conference. On the biggest day of the conference season, with a championship field chasing him, nobody in his race could beat him.
And he did not stop at individual gold. Fitzgerald's win powered Kinnelon to the Small School team championship — the Colts' second straight NJAC title. Defending a championship is one of the hardest things in sports: every team in the field spent a year aiming at Kinnelon, and every runner at Greystone knew exactly who the champions were. The Colts kept the crown anyway, with their leader setting the standard at the front of the race.
That double is what separates Fitzgerald's day from every other big performance at the meet. In the Large School races, the honors were split — West Morris Central's Andrew Ulto won the boys individual title in a blazing 16:08.38, while Mendham took the Large School team championship. Fitzgerald is the only boy at the NJAC championships who left Greystone with both an individual gold medal and a team trophy on the same day.
By the numbers: 16:36.34 — Fitzgerald's winning time, the second-fastest boys championship time of the day. Two — the championships he won on Tuesday, one by himself and one with his team. Two — Kinnelon's straight NJAC Small School titles. And one — the very first Player of the Week honor this newspaper has ever given out.
He had company in the double-gold club on the girls' side, where Mountain Lakes' Violet Page matched the feat — individual champion and team champion — as the Lakers won the girls Small School title. Montville's girls made history with the first Large School team title in program history, and Mendham's boys took the Large School crown to complete a Morris County sweep of all four team championships on the day.
For Kinnelon, the program now owns something every other small school in the conference wants: a standard. Back-to-back titles, a champion leading the pack, and a target on their backs that only grows from here. Programs do not stay on top by accident — they stay there because runners like Fitzgerald refuse to give the crown back.
Player of the Week honors are about the week that was, and nobody around here had a week like this one. A gold medal. A team championship. A title defended. Congratulations to Kieran Fitzgerald of Kinnelon — the Hometown Hero News Player of the Week.
