HANOVER, NJ — Some games are chess matches. This one was a wrestling match with a soccer ball — and Hanover Soccer Club's 10U boys won it, beating Caldwell 3-1 on Sunday in the most physical battle of their young season.
Nothing came easy. Every ball was contested, every run ended in a tangle, and the game had an edge from the opening whistle. Hanover matched Caldwell's aggression with some of its own — and struck first.
THE PENALTY THAT OPENED IT
The first half turned on one whistle. Ben Coffey was fouled, the referee pointed to the spot, and Alex Perez stepped up and buried the penalty kick for a 1-0 lead.
Coffey took it from there, adding two more goals to stretch the lead to 3-0. He nearly had a third, too — a second trip to the penalty spot gave him a shot at the hat trick, but this one wouldn't go. It was the only moment all game that didn't break Hanover's way.
ALL OVER THE FIELD
Hanover's pressure came from everywhere. Jacob Luttrell was all over the offense, moving the ball up the field all game. Lukas Lotocky controlled the left side, Gianmarco Emmolo put a shot on goal, and Jackson Guerriero kept finding the open position — he couldn't find the back of the net, but he rounded the keeper on one run that nearly turned into a goal. And when the game started to get hot, Logan Ferreira stepped up and matched Caldwell's physicality stride for stride.
THE WALL AT THE BACK
The goals built the lead, but the defense won the game. In the first half, keeper Nino Mongiovi held Caldwell scoreless. Bryce Wichelns took over in goal for the second half and made the save of the day, turning away a hard-hit ball. In front of them, Dylan Pascarella was all over the ball on one side of the defense and Demetri Verdis locked down the other — clearances, tackles and blocked runs, shift after shift.
Caldwell finally broke through in the final five minutes for its only goal, and Hanover simply closed the door again. Final score: Hanover 3, Caldwell 1 — a win with grass stains on it, earned the hard way.
