CHATHAM, NJ — Some players decide big games. Lucy Arps decided a county semifinal all by herself. The Chatham junior scored four goals and assisted on the other two on Saturday as the five-time defending champions blanked Montville 6-0 in the Morris County Tournament semifinals — six goals on the board, and Arps had a hand in every single one of them. That is why she is our Soccer Athlete of the Week.
A HAT TRICK BEFORE HALFTIME
Arps opened the scoring on a penalty kick with 26:45 to go in the first half, and the afternoon quickly became hers. She struck again with 8:28 left in the half, then completed her hat trick with 2:43 remaining before the break, sending second-seeded Chatham into halftime up 3-0 and in complete control. Three goals in one half of a county semifinal is a performance most players dream about — and Arps was only halfway done.
SCORER, THEN PROVIDER
She buried her fourth goal midway through the second half, then turned provider twice in the closing stretch. Senior Sophie D'Egido finished an Arps pass for a 5-0 lead with 25:18 to go, and sophomore Junna Sho closed the scoring on another Arps helper with 11:48 remaining, a tally that invoked the mercy rule and ended the semifinal early. Four goals of her own, both remaining goals created for teammates — there was simply no part of Chatham's attack that did not run through her.
ALL TOURNAMENT LONG
This was no one-game explosion. Arps also had a goal and two assists in Chatham's quarterfinal win over Madison, powering the Cougars' run through the bracket round after round. Now comes the game the whole season points toward: a championship meeting with West Morris at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 at Roxbury, with a sixth straight county crown on the line.
The best players raise their level when the games get bigger, and Lucy Arps just played her biggest game on the county's biggest stage. Six goals, one semifinal, one unforgettable afternoon.
