MONTVILLE, NJ — Lucy Arps turned a county semifinal into her own showcase on Saturday. The Chatham junior scored four goals and assisted on the other two as the five-time defending champions rolled past Montville 6-0 in the Morris County Tournament semifinals, booking yet another trip to the championship game. When the best player on the field has a hand in every single goal of a 6-0 semifinal, there is not much left for the other team to solve.
A FIRST HALF TO REMEMBER
Arps opened the scoring on a penalty kick with 26:45 to go in the first half, and from there the goals kept coming. She struck again with 8:28 left in the half to double the lead, then completed her hat trick with 2:43 remaining before the break, sending the second-seeded Cougars into halftime up 3-0 and in complete control of the ball and the match.
The second half brought more of the same. Arps buried her fourth goal midway through the half, then turned provider twice in the closing stretch. Senior Sophie D'Egido finished an Arps pass for a 5-0 lead with 25:18 to go, and sophomore Junna Sho closed the scoring on another Arps helper with 11:48 remaining, a tally that invoked the mercy rule and ended the afternoon early.
BACK WHERE THEY BELONG
Chatham's run to another final has been powered by its star all tournament long: Arps also had a goal and two assists in the quarterfinal win over Madison. Now the Cougars get the game they have been pointing toward — a championship meeting with West Morris at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 at Roxbury, with a sixth straight county crown on the line. Play like this, and Chatham will be very hard to stop.
